Centre Technician
Location: Nevis Centre
Job Title: Centre Technician
Reports to: General Manager
Job Purpose
The Centre Technician is an important part of the day-to-day running of the Nevis Centre. The role is practical and varied, helping to make sure the Centre is ready for meetings, events and activities, while keeping the building, equipment and surrounding grounds safe, clean and well maintained.The role will also include Key Holder responsibilities, opening and locking up the Centre. The successful candidate will be someone who takes pride in the Centre, is happy to work independently and can deal with the practical jobs and unexpected issues that come with keeping a busy community facility running smoothly.Key Duties and ResponsibilitiesMeetings and EventsThe Centre hosts a range of meetings, events and activities, and the Centre Technician will help make sure everything is ready for use.Set up rooms for meetings, events and activities, including arranging tables, chairs and other equipment.Help prepare rooms before events and clear them afterwards.Make sure rooms and facilities are clean, tidy and ready for the next booking.Help event organisers and customers with practical requirements where needed.Check that equipment is working and report any problems that could affect an event.Assist with moving furniture and equipment when required.
Key Holder and Building SecurityThe role will include regular Key Holder shifts, with responsibility for opening and securing the Centre.Act as a Key Holder for the Nevis Centre as part of an agreed rota.Open the Centre and make sure the building is ready for staff, customers and visitors.Lock up the Centre at the end of the day or following events, making sure the building is secure.Check doors, windows and other relevant areas as part of the closing routine.Carry out general checks of the building and report any faults, damage or concerns.Make sure entrances, communal areas and facilities are safe, clean and presentable.Report any incidents, hazards or security concerns promptly.
General MaintenanceThe Centre Technician will deal with day-to-day maintenance and minor repairs, where these are within their skills and experience.Carry out routine maintenance and minor repairs where appropriate.Identify problems around the building and report them to the Centre Manager or arrange for the appropriate contractor to attend.Help look after furniture, fixtures, fittings and equipment.Assist contractors and tradespeople when they are working at the Centre.Help with moving, storing and setting up equipment and supplies.Take a practical approach to resolving day-to-day issues and use initiative when problems arise.
Grounds and External AreasKeeping the outside of the Centre looking tidy and welcoming is also an important part of the role.Keep the grounds, entrances, paths and external areas clean, tidy and presentable.Carry out general jobs such as litter picking, sweeping and basic grounds maintenance.Keep an eye out for anything that could cause a safety issue and report or deal with it where appropriate.Help with seasonal outdoor maintenance and other reasonable grounds-related tasks.
Health and SafetyEveryone working at the Nevis Centre has a responsibility to help maintain a safe environment.Follow the Centre's health and safety procedures and policies.Take reasonable care of your own safety and the safety of others.Report hazards, accidents, damage and maintenance issues as soon as possible.Use tools, equipment and cleaning products safely and appropriately.Make sure rooms and equipment are set up safely before meetings and events.Follow any relevant procedures when opening, closing or securing the building.
Person SpecificationWe are looking for someone who is practical, reliable and takes pride in doing a good job. The role will suit someone who enjoys variety, is comfortable getting stuck in and can work without needing constant supervision.EssentialA practical, hands-on approach to work.Good general maintenance and problem-solving skills.Reliable and trustworthy, particularly when carrying out Key Holder and opening/closing duties.Able to work independently and use initiative.Good organisational skills and an eye for detail.Friendly and approachable manner when dealing with customers, visitors, contractors and colleagues.Physically able to carry out practical tasks, including moving furniture and equipment.A willingness to help wherever needed to keep the Centre running smoothly.A commitment to maintaining a clean, safe and welcoming environment.
DesirablePrevious experience in a caretaking, facilities, maintenance or similar role.Experience of setting up rooms for meetings or events.Basic knowledge of building maintenance and repairs.Experience of general grounds maintenance.Relevant health and safety training.
Working ArrangementsThe role will involve a mixture of daytime, evening and weekend shifts, depending on the Centre's programme of activities. This will include Key Holder shifts for opening and locking up the building.Some flexibility will be needed to support meetings, events and activities that take place outside normal daytime hours.The postholder may also be asked to carry out other reasonable duties that help with the smooth running of the Nevis Centre.What We Are Looking ForAbove all, we are looking for someone who is dependable, practical and takes pride in the Centre and the service it provides.The successful candidate will be happy to get involved in a wide range of jobs, from setting up a room for an evening event to fixing a minor problem, keeping the grounds tidy or making sure the building is secure at the end of the day.It is a varied role and an important one in helping to make sure the Nevis Centre is a welcoming, safe and well-run facility for everyone who uses it.Application Form
